The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix Review

“Being a teenager isn’t a number,” Maryellen said. “It’s the age when you stop liking them.”
“You don’t like the girls?” Patricia asked. “No one likes their children,” Maryellen said.
“We love them to death, but we don’t like them.”

“He thinks we’re what we look like on the outside: nice Southern ladies.
Let me tell you something…there’s nothing nice about Southern ladies.”

I read this with my book club on Gothy Discord.

I can't believe I was hesitant to read this book when I first heard of it. It's incredible. It's funny. It's shocking. It's disgusting. It's terrifying. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster!

Who the vampire is was obvious to me from the get-go. He is incredibly creepy, the way he just sneaks in to everyone's lives, charms the husbands and the children.. leaving the housewives, but at first only Patricia (and her senile mother-in-law) to be suspicious of him.

Around the midway point is where the steep ride towards the big climax begins. It's really well written horror! Grady Hendrix did a great job with the story arc, providing comedic relief, but also portraying vampires again as disgusting monsters who are also charming. I got so anxious and horrified at several points throughout. This is not a book for the squeamish! But the badass housewives come together to use each of their strengths and resources to save the day. Picture Desperate Housewives fighting Dracula! You don't fuck with housewives when it comes to their children.

There are also some cool extras in the back! Definitely pick this up - if you dare...
