Eighty Days by Matthew Goodman Review

Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World
by Matthew Goodman

This has been sitting on my want to read list since I started using Goodreads. By the time I finally got it, I don't remember if I knew this was non-fiction! I have heard of Nellie Bly and knew she was a journalist, but don't think I knew any more than that. Never heard of Elizabeth Bisland, but now that I've finished, that's no wonder.

This book is incredibly well-written and researched. It has a narrative style, so it was very exciting to feel like you were right there along the journey. It's a dense book, but don't be discouraged!

I learned a lot by reading this. From Nellie and Elizabeth's lives and how culture was around the world at the time, to facts about the statue of liberty and that live cattle was brought on to ocean liners to be served as food!

It was also interesting to see how not only their journeys around the world paralleled, but also their lives - they're even buried very close to each other! I actually didn't know who won the race, but I have to admit I rooted for Nellie, as I found the parts about her journey and she herself more interesting.

At the back of the book you also have extensive notes (the author didn't take any liberties in narrating this, everything is based on fact), selected bibliography (which is still a lot), illustration credits, an index, interview with the author and discussion questions.

Definitely recommend this, these two remarkable women deserve to be remembered!
